The areas assigned to the Group cover Electronics Materials and Components, Microelectronics, Photonics, Medical Electronics including Telemedicine, Industrial and Electronics Applications.
R&D Society
The Group is also responsible for all scientific, technical and related matters concerning the Centre for Materials for Electronics Technology (CMET) which has its Headquarters at Pune with units at Hyderabad and Thrissur. CMET's mission is to develop a knowledge base in electronics materials and processing technologies. The areas of focus for CMET are: Ultra High Purity Metals, Electronic packaging, Optoelectronics materials, sensors and actuators, materials for Nanoelectronics.
R&D activities
The Group carries out sponsored R&D activities at academic institutions and R&D laboratories in the areas assigned to it through a variety of plan programmes. The projects cover a wide spectrum including Electronics materials and components, discrete semiconductor devices, Microelectronics, Photonic Devices, sub-systems and technologies, equipment and systems development, Nanotechnology, Medical Electronics, Telemedicine, Industrial Applications Development and field demonstration in different sectors of the economy, for example, Transport, Power, Steel, Textiles etc. Some of the major R&D initiatives of the Group are: development of Linear Accelerators for medical and strategic applications, mission mode project for Power Electronics Technology and setting up of Nanoelectronics Centres.

Microelectronics Development Division:
- Microelectronics devices covering all discrete semiconductor devices and ICs (but excluding Hybrid microelectronics and opto-electronics devices).
- Devlopment of Capital Equipment for Process Technology, Process and Device Simulation.
- Semiconductor-VLSI-Chip Design
- Micro-electro Mechanical Systems: MEMS Programme
Nano-Technology Initiatives Division:
- Nano-Technology matters w.r.t. electronics and Information Technology.
- Nano - electro Mechanical Systems: NEMS Programme
- Developing Super computing Applications for Nano-Technology.
- National Nano-Technology Initiatives (incl. Vision & strategy delineation documentation, integrating with the framework Nano-technology initiatives taken by other S&T Departments/Govt. organizations and also aspects, such as Nano-electronics, Nano-material, Nano-computing).
Note: Other Activities common to above Divisions:
- Escorting innovations to successful mass replication.
- Policy inputs relating to International (Bi-lateral/Multi-lateral) Bodies.
- Technical responsibilities (pertaining to assigned areas) and providing related inputs to other Group/division in r/o industry promotion, foreign investment, international cooperation, export promotion, and manpower development etc.
