Digital Infrastructure and Role of Government

Digital India is an ambitious program of Government of India with the focus on preparing the Country for Knowledge based transformation and delivering Good Governance to citizens by synchronized and coordinated engagement with Central & State Government with a vision to transform the country into a digitally empowered society and Knowledge economy powered by Emerging Technologies.

India is now getting ready for emerging technologies such as 5G, artificial intelligence, blockchain, augmented reality, virtual reality, machine learning & deep learning, natural language processing and robotics. These are going to play a crucial role in the government and industry alike, whether it is planning or decision-making; accelerating development or analyzing deployment, problem solving or product development; discovering new trends or drawing out correlations.

Initiatives by MeitY regarding Emerging Technologies

1. Artificial Intelligence Committees Reports

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is expected to change the way we work and live. In view of its positive impact on the economy, the technology is being embraced by the countries across the world. Its proliferation is being regarded as part of the fourth industrial revolution. Govt. of India has also expressed the intention to support research and adoption of the such Technologies. In view of the possible impact of AI on the economy and society and to come out with policy framework on AI, MeitY constituted four committees on AI. Reports given by them are available on MeitY website (https://meity.gov.in/artificial-intelligence-committees-reports).

2. Centers of Excellence for Internet of Things

With the advent of the Internet of Things (IoT), fed by sensors in the trillions, working with intelligent systems in the billions and involving millions of applications, the IoT will drive new consumer and business behaviour. This will result in increasingly intelligent industry solutions, which, in turn, will create trillions of dollars in opportunity for IT industry and even more for the companies that take advantage of IoT.

Under the Digital India initiatives, MeitY along with NASSCOM and State Govts has set up Centres of Excellence on Internet of Things at Bengaluru, Gurugram and Gandhi Nagar. Centre on IOT was established in Bengaluru in Year 2016 along with Govt of Karnataka and NASSCOM. One of the objectives of these centres is to enable India emerge as innovation hub in IoT through democratization of innovation and realization of prototypes. Centres of Excellence on IoT, connects various entities such as startups, enterprises, venture capitalists, government and academia. It enables start-ups in areas of IoT, Big Data, Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality, Artificial Intelligence and Robotics to reach their maximum potential. Coe-IOT, Gurugram was operationalized in Year 2018. CoE-Gandhi nagar was operationalized in 2019. The focus areas of these centres is on Healthcare, Industry 4.0, Agriculture, Automobiles etc. Presently 75 Startups have been incubated at CoE-IOT, Bengaluru, 20 at Gurugram & 8 at Gandhi nagar.

3. Centre of Excellence for Virtual and Augmented Reality (VARCoE)

Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality (VR and AR) have massive innovation potential across a wide range of industries and research fields. This research and innovation is currently in domains across a range of industries including such as product and skill development, Health and medical science, art and architecture, transport, construction, tourism, entertainment, education, and productivity software. With an objective to explore the opportunities in this niche area, Government of India in partnership with Government of Odisha, Software Technology Parks of India (STPI), IIT-Bhubaneshwar and a philanthropist has recently established Centre of Excellence for Virtual and Augmented Reality (VARCoE) at IIT-Bhubaneswar. Presently nine major projects on AR&VR applications in various domains involving 12-15 highly qualified faculty and researchers of IIT Bhubaneshwar are in progress.
